The Best of Intentions: The What and How of Kavvanah

The world we live in is busier and more distracting than ever; and the attempt to cultivate focus is simultaneously both widespread and counter-cultural. Mitzvot, such as prayer, can be the site of intentional, even immersive experiences, but they are not necessarily so. What would it mean to have kavvanah b’mitzvot? And, critically, how can one work towards having it?

In this week-long seminar, we will explore the core sugyot of mitzvot [einan] tzerikhot kavvanah (whether mitzvot require intentionality or not), and study practices and techniques for achieving kavvanah in prayer.

Join us on Zoom for morning Talmud seder with Dr. Shana Strauch Schick, and for three afternoon sessions:

Monday December 26, 12:45-2pm: R. J. Rolando Matalon: "Seeking You in the Morn: Piyyutim for Entering Prayer."

Tuesday, December 27, 12:45-2pm: Dr. Devora Steinmetz and Dr. R. Jon Kelsen: "As if Standing before the Shekhinah: The Role of Imagination in Prayer."

Wednesday December 28, 12:45-2pm: Dr. Matan Wygoda: "Niggunim as Means or Ends? Hasidic Niggunim for Cultivating Kavannah in Learning and Prayer."
